Bird Walk at Fadakhar Govt. Plant Nursery, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh

About Fadakhar Govt. Plant Nursery

Nestled on the southern outskirts of Bilaspur, the Fadakhar Plant Nursery is a refreshing green escape that blends conservation, horticulture, and nature tourism. Surrounded by semi-natural woodland patches, village wetlands, and open grassland habitats, the nursery serves as an important green lung for the region. The area supports a rich mix of native and ornamental flora, including bamboo, neem, gulmohar, ficus, flowering shrubs, medicinal plants, and seasonal wetland vegetation. During the monsoon and winter months, the landscape becomes especially vibrant, attracting butterflies, dragonflies, and small mammals while creating ideal conditions for birdlife. The nursery’s quiet trails and water-rich surroundings make it an underrated destination for casual birding, where visitors may spot kingfishers, pond herons, bee-eaters, drongos, egrets, parakeets, and a variety of migratory waterbirds moving through the Bilaspur plains.
Beyond its scenic beauty, Fadakhar Plant Nursery also plays a growing role in environmental awareness and urban greening efforts in Chhattisgarh. Local forest workers and nursery staff contribute to plantation drives, habitat restoration, and the maintenance of green corridors that help sustain biodiversity around Bilaspur. However, like many peri-urban ecosystems, the area faces pressures from rapid urban expansion, waste dumping, shrinking wetlands, and disturbance to nesting habitats. Conservation efforts now focus on protecting native plant diversity, improving water retention in wetland pockets, and encouraging eco-friendly tourism and community participation. For nature lovers, photographers, and birdwatchers, Fadakhar offers more than just a nursery — it is a living reminder of how green spaces can support both wildlife and people in a fast-growing city landscape.

Common birds of Fadakhar Govt. Plant Nursery

Fadakhar Government Plant Nursery is a rewarding birding spot where dense trees, bamboo groves, wetlands, and open clearings attract an impressive variety of resident and migratory birds throughout the year. Among the highlights is the elegant Indian Paradise Flycatcher, often seen darting gracefully through shaded woodland patches, while the soft cooing of the Oriental Turtle Dove echoes from the treetops. Bright flashes of yellow reveal the Black-hooded Oriole, and the rhythmic metallic calls of the Coppersmith Barbet add constant life to the canopy. Shrubs and flowering trees frequently host flocks of tiny Oriental White-eye moving actively in search of nectar and insects. The nursery’s wetland pockets and marshy edges also provide habitat for elusive Bitterns and several species of brilliantly coloured Kingfishers, while graceful Swallows sweep low across the water and open skies at dusk. Together, these birds make Fadakhar an unexpectedly rich urban biodiversity hotspot for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature enthusiasts visiting Bilaspur.
